256th Battalion CEF
The 256th battalion was recruited in Ontario and Nova Scotia, to be employed in special railway and bridge building projects, and mobilized in Nova Scotia, Windsor and Toronto, with a strength of 18 officers and 531 other ranks. The battalion embarked from Halifax on 28 March 1917, on the troop ship Missanabie, and disembarked in the UK on 6 April. Arrived in France in June 1917. Constructed and maintained light railways which were used for carrying communication and supplies to the lines and bringing back wounded. Perpetuated by the Algonquin Regiment.
