The battalion embarked from Halifax on 1 April 1916, on the troop ship Empress of Britain, and disembarked in the UK on 9 April, and arrived in France on 12 August.

The 74th battalion was recruited in York and Peel counties and mobilized in Toronto, Ontario, with a strength of 36 officers and 1046 other ranks.
